Light bulb cozy

To continue the lighting theme of yesterday...here's a totally different designer lamp, but equally as cute. The shades are made of used wool blankets - love them! They're from Dutch artists/designers Beeldenbouwers, who also make wonderful cabinets and sculptures.

Light blubs

I know my blog is meant to be about junk, great but affordable interiors and how do create this, but aren't these lights just charming? I love design that makes you smile and this certainly did. I probably can't afford any of these but just wanted to share it with you. These lights are Dutch designer Pieke Bergmans' 'Light Blubs' or as she explains: "a light bulb that has gone way out of line. Infected by the dreaded Design Virus, these Blubs have taken on all kinds of forms and sizes you wouldn't expect from such well behaving and reliable little products. Nevertheless, they seem to be enjoying their new free existences." The blubs seem like bogies coming out of lamps, or fat puddings crashing down from the sky and collapsing on the table. Brilliant.

Collecting....everything

Wow - that's what I call a wall (Apartment Therapy, house in Brooklyn, NY). My future mum-in-law would get a heart-attack if she saw this: "The dust!!" Not sure whether I would create this in my own house (not because of dustofobia though), although it does look quite sophisticated. And if you're a fanatic art and book collector and stuck for wall space, you don't have much choice really do you?

Marrakesh. For an overdose of inspiration, beauty and colour.

Last year I visited Marrakesh with friends and if you're ever looking for an ideal shopping experience...go here! Fabrics, lanterns, leather bags, herbs and spices, jewelry, you name it - it's there in abundance and if you're good at haggling you have a ball. I bought lots of fabric - I had just started an upholstery class which I didn't finish in the end but that's a different story - and by the end of the week my eyes were hurting looking at all those colours, non-stop. I came home with six throws (how many throws does a girl need?!?)...

A very nice blog about all things Marrakesh-y is My Marrakesh, with great photos and tips for food, decor and yes, fabrics.

The photos on here are my own.

This guy is smiling because I have just bought three large pieces of fabric from him... (after haggling for 30 minutes.....)

How to turn a bath tub into a sofa and rags into a rug

Bath tubs, shopping trolleys and other things that can be turned into furniture

Reestore is the brainchild of Max McMurdo, and the products clearly show that you don't need to sacrifice design and aesthetics in favour of environmental sustainability. Reestore excels in "cheekily" turning waste objects into stylish and functional pieces of furniture and accessories...
(I want that bath!!! )

Seat made of ties

Here's another very cool design.... a chair with the seat woven from old ties ('Un-tie chair, 2009; by Peter Raphael Russo).

Rag Rug

Also, in the same category as 'I've got lots of old fabric/clothes and I don't know what to do with it....'; here's the idea of creating a Rag Rug. Sounds very crafty (next thing you know I suggest quilting), but I thought it was a pretty good idea. Seems very straight forward anyway. Here's the full work plan.

Picquot ware

I love the teapot and other items from the Picquot ware range. I snapped each one of these up at different times, one in an antique store, another at a car boot sale. I believe the design of these is 1960s. You see Picquot ware pots quite often and they're worth quite a lot of money if they're in good nick, so worth looking out for (apart from the fact that they are just very nice to look at!)

Creating a cloud of picture frames

The photo wall in our kitchen: an ever-growing cloud of frames.

And one of the vintage (1960s Danish design) G-Plan chairs I rescued from a garage in Aberdeen, from a fellow Freecycler (long live Freecycle!!). I recovered the seat.

Art by Seripop

At Peacock Visual Arts we've got a show on by Canadian artists' duo Seripop. They've wallpapered the whole gallery with hundreds of their prolific posters which looks stunning. And guess what...they are for sale too! They're really cheap - around £20 for an original Seripop. And they might become very famous soon...they've got a show coming up at the Baltic art centre in Newcastle! (Sorry, am I wearing my marketing hat here?)

These are the ones I bought:

Paradise! The Puces de Saint-Ouen Flea Market in Paris

OMG, I felt like a kid in a sweet shop...

Next time you're in Paris, forget the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, head straight down to Europe's biggest flea market for a day in treasure hunters' paradise... The Puces de Saint-Ouen. Hundreds of stalls with vintage clothes, jewelry, furniture, art and antiques covering a whole neighbourhood. It's not that cheap, but even if you don't buy anything you'll come home with lots of inspiration and heaps of photos! And if you have totally fallen in love with that fabulous Danish designer sofa from the 60s, they can ship the whole thing home for you (so don't worry about those Easyjet baggage limits).

Take a look here for more information...

How to Make a bowl out of old magazines

I came across Apartment Therapy's tip of the day (which they apparently found on another blog called A Little Hut) ... How to make a bowl out of old magazines. Cracking idea! Sometimes that stack of colourful magazines is just too pretty to shove into the ol' recycling bin, but this way you get to look at them for a little longer. Seems a little bit laborious, but hey, it sure keeps you busy on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Bureau make-over

Last year I dragged an old dark brown bureau home which I found via Freecycle at an old people's home in the area. I finally found time to give the thing a well-needed make-over and here's the result. It's still in the garage, drying...I'll post another photo once it's looking all shiny and proud in our study! The colour is 'Hague blue' from Farrow & Ball (we've got that on our front door and it's actually outdoor paint, but it does the job fine). I'm thinking of painting some sort of oriental flower pattern across the front as well (in the same glossy black as I've done the inside of the writing desk), but we'll see.

My favourite book today

My favourite style book at the moment! Great to see how other people enjoy junk treasures and colour just like I do!

My Louis XV chair from the local junk shop

Our living room. I found this Louis XV chair in a junk shop near my village, for the grand sum of £20. I will recover it some day as the fabric on it is too beige for my liking, but for the time being I'll just funk it up with some loose fabric or cushions.

The lamp shade is from DOT (Amsterdam and The Hague). The artwork is a limited edition print from Scottish artist Francis Boag.

Beautiful Bed and Breakfast in Cluny, France

Auberge Le clos de l'abbaye
Cluny, Burgundy, France

Sometimes in your life you come across real gems at very unexpected moments. After a long day of traveling (while on holiday in France) my partner and I ended up in a town called Cluny. Once we found out that most of the hotels and B and B's were fully booked we didn't really know what to do.

We decided to walk around town to see if we would find somewhere to stay and we found a small sign on a big door in the outside wall of the Abbey that said 'Chambre d'hote'. We knocked on the door and a moment later were warmly welcomed into the most incredible and beautiful bed and breakfast I'd ever seen. A just freshly renovated mansion within the abbey walls - and totally filled with vintage and junkmarket finds, reupholstered chairs, combined with colourful modern Ikea bathrooms, curtains and bedlinen.

I kept on walking around like Alice in Wonderland and I think the B&B lady must have thought I was the best guest ever. She told me that apart from running the B and B she also had a workshop in the house in which she did up old furniture. On the weekend she and her husband were junkmarket fanatics and the B and B seemed like the ideal place to display all the found treasures! I thought she was such a cool lady - and from now on I know what I want in life: a B and B and a furniture workshop (ideally in France ;-)
